What is career coaching?
Career coaching helps you to explore your options and make the right decisions when considering, or faced with change at work.
The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.
— Steve Jobs
Most of us experience periods of change during our career – sometimes strategic and straightforward, others forced and unwelcome. In both scenarios, a bfpeople career coach will help you to understand your strengths, options and navigate your personal development.
Using a combination of discussion and information from a variety of written and psychometric exercises, your career coach will work with you to help you see and think about things in a different way. This is likely to include:
- A full assessment and appraisal of your skills, experience and motivations
- Written reports from psychometric exercises
- Creation of a full understanding of your weaknesses, development and training opportunities
- Exploration of your career options – inside and outside of your experience as necessary
- Creation of a realistic and agreed action plan
- Interview techniques and practice
- Advice and support on preparing a CV that will get you noticed
- Advice and support on using LinkedIn for your job search

In a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.

While many people choose career coaching after losing a job, we also work with individuals who are proactively taking control of their career. Ambitious people want to manage their career through increasing their self-awareness and developing a positive career plan. You might want to explore making the move from corporate life to self employment, or a start up operation. An objective analysis of your strengths and suitability is an invaluable element of your planning and decision making process.
I approached John about some coaching a number of years ago as I was at a crossroads in my career.
At the end of one session, in which John asked me a lot of questions and put a number of scenarios to me, I already had more clarity on what I could achieve and I had a lot to think about!
The time I spent with John was invaluable. It made me realise my strengths and that my weaknesses were able to be worked on rather than hold me back.
John never tells you what to do but the unique style of questioning and “what ifs” were ideally suited to me.

We have worked with hundreds of people facing career change. Many sponsored by their organisation as part of a package to leave, and others who are taking responsibility for their own career. We work in all industry sectors, both private and public, and with people who are in, or seeking to secure, leadership and management positions.
How long does it take and how much does it cost?
All bfpeople career coaching programmes are bespoke – you are never tied to a long term commitment. Sometimes you only need one two-hour session to make a breakthrough that works for you. Sometimes it takes a little longer. We will discuss your situation and objectives with you at the outset, agree a plan and a timescale. Our solutions focused coaching style means that we don’t spend hours on reflective navel-gazing – we concentrate our efforts on finding solutions rather than problems, on developing strengths rather than weaknesses.
It is not as much about who you used to be, as it is about who you choose to be.
Most sessions are conducted by Skype or similar video and can be held out of work hours. Face to face sessions can be arranged subject to geography, logistics and availability.
That initial discussion is always free of charge. Programmes start at £360 including VAT.
