Leadership Judgement: the LJI for local government
The LJI- LG tests and develops leadership judgement for local government organisations.
What would you do?
You are the Chief Executive in a local authority where a proposed reorganisation of secondary schools is proving highly contentious.
Your Facilities Manager has just e-mailed you to advise that there will be a noisy demonstration at a meeting to be held this evening at your organisation’s headquarters.
Your Director of Children’s Services has told you in the past that some of her team have received personal threats by those who object to the changes.
Your Facilities Manager fears that there may be some potential for violence and is suggesting that the Police are advised and that the demonstrators should not be admitted to the building.
Your Legal Officer has made it clear that this is a public meeting, therefore the public can only be excluded by resolution of the meeting for specific statutory reasons.
The decision is: should you seek to bar the demonstrators from attending the meeting? What would you do?

The LJI-LG is an online Situational Judgement Test, consisting of 16 scenarios similar to the one above. Each scenario places the test-taker in the role of leader and offers four potential courses of action the leader could take. The participant is asked to rate the “appropriateness” of each option. Uniquely, it assesses the test-taker’s preferred leadership style as well as their judgement in choosing the most appropriate course of action based on the information provided in the scenarios. The LJI-LG is suitable for use with any new or existing manager or leader and has been used from junior management to Chief Executive positions.
The range of narrative and graphical reports available illustrate both the preferred leadership styles (Directive, Consultative, Consensual and Delegative) demonstrated by the participant. They also indicate their accuracy in assessing the most appropriate course of action in each of the scenarios, compared to an appropriate comparison group.
The LJI for local government is suitable for use with any new or exisiting manager or leader and has been used from junior management to chief executive positions. It is used in recruitment, development and coaching situations and can be used in conjunction with the Coach on the Desktop to develop leadership decision making skills.
The original Leadership Judgement Indicator has been used in many local authorities since 2004, in recruitment, development and coaching situations. This new version retains all the features of the original with the added benefit that all scenarios are set in local government, creating greater face validity with participants, and the comparison group for reports is a wholly UK public sector population.
The LJI has been completed by more than 20,000 leaders. Used alone, or in conjunction with the Coach on the Desktop, the LJI for Local Government improves Leadership decision making and brings clarity about where the responsibility for key decisions should lie.
If you currently use the LJI in local government projects, make the switch to the dedicated public sector edition today. Call bfpeople on +44(0)333 202 2225 or click below.
